I’m not interested in creating representational art. Art may have started out with cave men drawing stick figures to represent humans, animals, plants, and their environment. And, now, with so many technologies available to so many, virtually everyone can create a representational image.
I’m interested in emotional art. That is what I create. I start with an idea for an emotional state, employing oils and a surface to connect that idea to a feeling. That is the beginning of a conversation. A conversation without words. The conversation happens by applying pigment to surface – the opening remarks. Then, by listening to the applied pigment, I have to react. The painting directs me into a reactive action – an emotional reaction. The process builds as the conversation continues. Sometimes the conversations are affable and friendly, but rarely. Usually, the conversation is like a battle, full of challenges. It usually takes most of the courage and mental strength that I can muster to complete a painting. When the conversation has come to its natural conclusion, the painting is complete. Just as verbal conversations end. And for all the same variety of reasons.
I divide my time time between Wailea, Maui and Seattle, Wa.
